Decanting a solution from one beaker to another

 

Decanting is a standard laboratory operation in which a liquid or solution is separated from solid material. This is also possible to do with a gas.

When a solid precipitates from a solution and accumulates at the bottom of a vessel, like a beaker shown here, it is often possible to carefully pour the liquid off the top of the solids, as shown in the figure above from beaker to beaker, if care is taken to avoid agitating the solids.

This same task can also be accomplished by using a pipette to remove the liquid.

 

In the image above, there is also a glass stir rod being used to transfer the liquid from one beaker to another to avoid splashing.
